10 THINGS [YOU WOULDN’T KNOW] ABOUT ME

For the past few years I have challenged myself to write an Instagram post a day and during that time I’ve been really committed to researching and learning and experimenting with all that’s related to hydration and healthy living.

Just recently I realised that along that journey I’ve never talked much about myself. So now that I sit down to make a few notes I’m finding it’s really interesting that I take so much about myself for granted. I’ve been thinking lots and I realise we are all such individuals and so quirky.

Let’s get started with 10 things you wouldn’t know about me.

      1. I can really effectively raise my right eyebrow. I do it in surprise in shock or in disbelief .. In fact I love doing it, but I can’t for the life of me budge my left eyebrow without my face contorting into an ugly grimace. I’ve really tried and failed to teach myself how to strengthen that little left muscle! Try it .. you’ll see!!
      2. My all time favourite foods are apples, avocado, broccoli and basil. Don’t get me wrong, I am the daughter of a butcher so I love my meat, but I am a happy bunny if I am eating fresh, crispy, crunchy and into green. Add some fresh chilli and I’m in heaven.
      3. I am a little addicted to Netflix. It took awhile for the concept of watching shows on my laptop / ipad … but its just so cool to be tucked into bed with my fave series of the moment.
      4. I am a Graphic Designer and a Product Designer. My long term passion is design and I’ve run my own successful design studio for years now. When I came up with the Chiller2Go idea I realised I had the knowledge to make this new business work, so with my running shoes on, I’ve spent any spare time developing my concept, sourcing products, promoting and lastly selling. I can tell you it’s been exhausting but also incredibly rewarding and mostly lots of fun.
      5. I used to be very shy. I’ve kind of grown out of it, but I’m still not great at networking i.e. approaching people I don’t know. I tend to stand back, at the same time, knowing that as soon as I start up a conversation all will be cool .. so I need to learn not to doubt myself.
      6. My star sign is Libra and I’m a true Libran. This means I am all about balance, harmony and peace. When my life feels unbalanced or unstable, I’m quick to correct it, looking for ‘my idea’ of perfection. I strive to be liked and respected by the people around me. I think it’s a pretty good star sign .. no complaints from me [obviously I’m feeling balanced right now].
      7. When I hear the word “something” pronounced “somethink” I totally cringe. Who knows where this pronunciation comes from and why? It drives me crazy, I know I can’t be alone here! I can often be heard threatening to write a book on etiquette …. one day!
      8. I like cooking almost as much as I love eating. I’ve always loved food and think about it all the time. I’m hardly finished a meal and I’m thinking ahead about what my next meal will be. This is partly because I like planning ahead and partly because I like to make sure I’m eating a balanced diet. This is a bit tricky since I have tried to stop snacking between meals because it can make me hungry ahead of time. When I travel I relax a bit on this rule and make sure I try all the local foods on offer. I eat everything and because I’m so active compared to my usual work day, I don’t tend to put on weight. What a bonus hey. I wish I could travel forever!
      9. I’ve always been a cat lover, but now we have a parrot. Until our beautiful little chatty, parrot became our pet, I had no idea just how affectionate and how intelligent such a little bird could be. She has such a big personality and sure lives up to her name, PARTY [named by my partner in crime] .. she is such a people/party person and such entertainer!
      10. I only drink water, coffee and wine. It’s pretty rare for me to drink anything else. I like to keep it simple. Sure I’ll add some fresh flavours to my water, when I can be bothered, but lucky for me I really, really like water. BTW I do drink way more water than I drink coffee or wine 😉

So there you are .. a nice change from water and healthy living! Of course if you are feeling inspired, head on over to our Hydration Challenge and do something for you! http://chiller2go.com.au/hydration-challenge/

Water: It is your BFF!

Has it occurred to you today that you are thirsty? Did you know that by the time you experience the thirsty sensation, you are actually dehydrated. That thirsty feeling is your body needing to be re-hydration. Most of us already know that drinking water is important, but making sure you drink enough water all year round is another story, isn’t it!

Over the last few years I have really come to terms with the miracle that is WATER and I now realise that water really should be our Best Friend Forever!

Hydrate on-the-go

The Top 10 amazing things that water does for our bodies, inside and out.

1. Water saves you money!
Water is FREE! Even if you choose filtered water, it’s STILL cheaper than the alternatives!

2. Water helps satisfy hunger.
Water has no fat, no calories, no carbs and no sugar .. so not surprisingly it is one of the best ingredients for weight loss. Did you realize that often when we think we are hungry, we’re actually thirsty. By having a drink of water first, you’ll be less likely to over indulge.

3. Water keeps your skin young.
Do you rely on expensive creams and treatments? Drinking water is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin fresh and glowing. Drinking water ensures that nutrients are delivered to our skin cells keeping them hydrated and plump which leads to firmer youthful looking skin. You’ll have to admit it’s the best anti ageing treatment there is!

4. Water is a natural headache remedy.
If you suffer from headaches, one of the causes may be that you are not drinking enough water. Keeping hydrated can help to prevent or even alleviate a headache.

5. Water gives you energy.
Daily hydration is important, but drinking extra fluids is extremely important during and after exercise. Dehydration can lead to weakness, fatigue and dizziness.

6. Water boosts our immune system.
When you are hydrated you are less likely to get sick. Drinking plenty of water helps fight against colds, flu, and other minor ailments.

7. Water balances our moods.
When your body is functioning at its best, you’ll not only feel good but you will be happy! Who doesn’t want to feel happy?

8. Water speeds up your metabolism.
Water is the primary mode of transportation for nutrients in the body and is essential for proper circulation. It has been proven that people who drink enough water have a faster metabolism.

9. Water can reduce joint and back pain.
Water can help lubricate your joints, alleviate your pain and get you moving.

10. Water helps with kidney and bowel function.
Good hydration helps our kidneys do their job of cleansing our body of toxins. The more yellow your urine is may mean you haven’t been drinking enough water. Constipation can result when you don’t drink enough water.

BASICALLY, WE NEED WATER TO SURVIVE!
Did you know we will only live a few days without water – so you can understand why WATER ranks pretty high on my BFF list.

You may be finding that ‘plain old’ water just doesn’t always cut it and you’re a bit desperate for variety. Whether you have joined our Hydration Challenge or not, I understand that it’s important to make the concept of drinking water enjoyable.

So, what thirst-quenching solutions do I have?

Infused waters and hot teas of course!
They’re easy to make, nutritious and refreshing and I have a few of my personal favourite ideas to share with you.

But before we get started, there are a few essentials you should know to make them the best they can be.
1. Choose organic when you can.
2. Wash fruit and rinse herbs to remove chemicals, pesticides, dirt and other residues.

General Tips:
• Citrus and strawberries (softer fruits) an be sliced thick, thin, halved, or quartered.
• Apples (harder fruits) should be sliced thin as they take longer to release flavors.
• Cucumbers, citrus fruits and mint flavour water almost immediately.
• Apples, cinnamon, fresh ginger and rosemary need an overnight soak in the fridge.
• Sliced strawberries start looking waterlogged after a few hours.
• Citrus and whole berries look pretty good even after hours in the fridge.
• It’s best to crush ginger root, rosemary, and lemongrass and tear or crush leafy herbs like mint, basil, and coriander to release their oils.

My personal TOP 3 Infused waters

Twelve warning signs of DeHydration!

It’s surprisingly easy to become dehydrated if you don’t drink enough water. Once dehydration has set in, the body slowly begins to shut down, eventually causing problems. Fortunately, your body will tell you that you’re dehydrated by displaying one or more of the following warning symptoms.

1. DRY MOUTH
A dry mouth is an early sign of dehydration that typically also includes dry or cracked lips.

2. THIRST
This sounds pretty obvious, but when you’re dehydrated, you become thirsty. It’s just your body’s way of urging you to drink. On average, a woman should drink about eight glasses of water a day and a man should drink about 12 glasses of water a day.

3. FATIGUE
Fatigue is a common sign of dehydration. If you feel tired after exercise or sluggish in the afternoon, it may be because you haven’t had enough to drink.

4. FLUSHED SKIN
If you notice that your skin is flushed, it may be a symptom of dehydration. Of course, remember that you would be naturally flushed if you have just been exercising or been out in the sun.

5. HEADACHE
Many headaches are caused by dehydration, so if you feel a headache coming on, drink some water immediately.

6. DIZZINESS
Feeling dizzy can be a symptom of severe dehydration and is usually caused by a lack of blood to the brain. Drink water immediately.

7.  LACK OF CONCENTRATION
It’s called “brain drain.” The moment you feel thirsty, some of the brains most important functions go haywire … from the way you feel to the power your mind has to process info and memories.

8. MOOD SWINGS
If you find yourself feeling down in the dumps or snapping for no reason, it may be because you are dehydrated. Try drinking some water to see if it makes you feel better.

9. NAUSEA
When you are nauseous, you usually don’t feel like ingesting anything, but when it comes to dehydration, ingesting fluids is very important. Nausea is also a common warning sign for pregnant women who are dehydrated.

10. SKIN ELASTICITY
Normally, when you pinch your skin, it moves back into place once you let go of it. But if you have poor skin elasticity, your skin will take longer to go back into place. Doctors may do this test when identifying a patient with dehydration.

11. CONSTIPATION
Constipation is another common symptoms of dehydration. In children and adults, this means going eight or more hours without urinating.

12. DARK URINE COLOUR
The best indicator of dehydration is the color of your urine. Ideally your urine should be clear and if it isn’t, that means that you haven’t had enough water. The color of your urine will actually tell you how much you are lacking. Whether your urine is a dark yellow or a pale yellow, if your urine isn’t clear, it’s time to sip on a water.

Hydration matters .. and Chiller2Go knows it!

Did you know hydration is one of the key foundations of good health?

Hydration matters
Most adults lose about 3 litres of water a day. Most of us also don’t drink enough to replenish what we lose and not only is it vital, it keeps our skin in spanking condition, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, and can also even help us lose weight.

We believe the first step and the simplest way to a healthy life is to carry a drink bottle with you to stay hydrated! So we say, up the ante on your water intake and have a Chiller2Go Drink Bottle with you wherever you go!

FACTS ABOUT OUR CHILLER2GO TRITAN™ DRINK BOTTLES

Our Chiller2Go Drink Bottles are made from BPA Free Tritan™. Whether you drop it, throw it in your backpack or wash it hundreds of times, a product made with Tritan™ lasts. Tritan from Eastman is a durable plastic that has much greater shatter resistance than other plastics and glass. It won’t warp or crack in the dishwasher. And, unlike stainless steel, Tritan won’t dent or ding.

CLARITY
Tritan™ plastic looks like glass, until you drop it. And while other clear plastic or stainless products lose their luster after repeated dishwashing — our drink bottles have looks that last.

SAFETY
There might be some confusion as to the true safety of plastics claiming to be BPA-free, but we want to set the record straight. Not only is Tritan™ a BPA-free plastic, it doesn’t contain bisphenol S or any other bisphenols. Combine that with shatter resistance, and you’ve got a tough plastic that is safe enough to trust with your family.

WATER FACT
It’s said that drinking water before meals can help you loose weight. Just knowing that drinking up can help you eat less should be enough motivation to keep a drink bottle handy!

If you don’t have a drink bottle you love, it might be time to get one! Choose a healthy lifestyle and give your body what it needs … a Chiller2Go Drink Bottle!

Cheesy Corn Fritters Recipe

See the lovely cheesy corn fritters recipe to inspire you to introduce more vegetables to your day on day 4 of National Nutrition Week!

Did you know that less than 4% of us eat enough vegetables on any given day?

In fact the average Australian only eats around half their recommended daily intake.
One great way to Try For 5 serves of vegetables a day is to make that sure half your meal contains vegetables. This way you’ll enjoy around 3 serves of vegetables in one meal – that’s already more than the average Australian eats in a day! Try for 5 … with a healthy balanced meal.

Cheesy Corn Fritters Recipe

5 MIN – Prep Time // 25 MIN – Cooking Time

Ingredients

2 eggs

410g can creamed corn

1 ¼ cups coarsely grated tasty cheese

2 green shallots, finely sliced

1 cup plain flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 cup baby spinach leaves, finely chopped

Sea-salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper, to season

8 Tbsp Cobram Estate light extra virgin olive oil

1 avocado, peeled, stoned, diced

Juice of ½ lemon

¼ cup basil leaves

Fried eggs, to serve (optional)

Crispy bacon, to serve (optional)

Method

Combine eggs, creamed corn, tasty cheese and shallots in a large bowl. Sift in flour and baking powder and stir until just combined. Stir in spinach leaves then season.

Heat 2 tablespoons of the Cobram Estate light extra virgin olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. When oil is hot, add ¼ cup of batter to pan and smooth with a teaspoon to slightly flatten. Repeat to make 3 fritters. Cook for 3 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through. Remove from pan.

Repeat step 2, three more times with remaining oil and batter to make 12 fritters.

Toss avocado, lemon juice and basil together in a medium bowl.

Serve fritters with avocado mixture for the perfect brunch or light well balanced meal.

Try For 5 Vegetables Challenge with National Nutrition Week

Why not challenge yourself to eat 5 serves of vegetables every day during National Nutrition Week!

3 great ways to add vegetables to your day are:

1. Eat a rainbow

Have a bunch of different coloured vegetables every day during National Nutrition Week to get the max variety of beneficial nutrients, PLUS you’ll love the variety of tastes and textures!

2. Try something new every day

Try a new vegetable, a new recipe, or try eating vegetables in a way that you don’t normally eat them. Or get more bang for your buck by using up ageing veggies, and eating the parts that you usually throw away!

3. Love your legumes

Did you know that 2016 is International Year of the Pulse? Or that legumes are in the vegetable AND protein food groups? Pulses, beans and legumes are a cheap and versatile source of fibre, protein plus many other important nutrients.

What’s in a colour?

RED

Red fruits and vegetables are coloured by a natural plant pigment called lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer and keep our heart healthy.

PURPLE /BLUE

The plant pigment anthocyanin is what gives blue/purple fruits and vegetables their distinctive colour. Anthocyanin also has antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage and can help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease.

ORANGE/YELLOW

Carotenoids give this group their vibrant colour. A well-known carotenoid called Betacarotene is found in sweet potatoes, pumpkins and carrots. It is converted to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy mucous membranes and healthy eyes. Another carotenoid called lutein is stored in the eye and has been found to prevent cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness.

GREEN

Green vegetables contain a range of phytochemicals including carotenoids, indoles and saponins, all of which have anti-cancer properties. Leafy greens such as spinach and broccoli are also excellent sources of folate.

BROWN/WHITE

White fruits and vegetables contain a range of health-promoting phytochemicals such as allicin (found in garlic) which is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Some members of the white group, such as bananas and potatoes, are also a good source of potassium.
